Doug Wendel to be next Festus Chief of Police

(Festus) City of Festus Mayor Sam Richards has appointed Captain Doug Wendel to be the next Chief of Police upon the retirement of Chief Tim Lewis on May 1st, 2023 – the appointment was confirmed by unanimous consent of the City Council at their regular meeting on Monday, December 19th.  According to Mayor Richards, “Doug is a great example of service to a community – with better than 27 years as a police officer and more recently as a member of the Festus Board of Education, we are excited about what the future will bring with Doug Wendel as our next Police Chief.”

Captain Wendel’s career with the Festus Police Department includes; Patrol Officer for seven years, Patrol Sergeant for five years, Administrative Sergeant of Support Services for over nine years, and Captain for over five years.  As Captain, Doug is responsible for many of the day-to-day operations of the Police Department, development, and oversight of many areas of the budget and provides supervision of twenty Patrol Officers, three Detectives, four School Resource Officers, eight dispatchers, and two records clerks in their daily operations.

Captain Wendel will continue in his duties as Captain until the retirement of Chief Tim Lewis on May 1st.  He will be formally sworn in as Chief of Police at the City Council’s regular monthly meeting on Monday, April 24th, 2023, at 6pm.
